Efforts to Close Legal Loopholes Following a Tragic Home Break-in

1 hour ago 0

The father of Logan Federico, a 22-year-old college student murdered during a home break-in, is making a strong appeal to federal lawmakers. He wants them to close the legal loopholes that let career criminals return to the streets. Stephen Federico is advocating for Logan’s Law, a legislative proposal aimed at addressing this issue.

The proposed law includes several measures:

  • Establishing a public database for repeat violent offenders.
  • Facilitating cross-county and interstate communication.
  • Holding prosecutors accountable for handling habitual criminals.

Logan’s Law targets systemic blind spots that allowed Logan’s accused murderer, Alexander Dickey, to escape long-term confinement despite his lengthy record.

Stephen Federico testified to Congress about his daughter’s accused killer, highlighting the ongoing challenges in the criminal justice system. At a recent roundtable in South Carolina, attended by U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, Federico pushed for Logan’s Law. This legislation aims to create a registry for violent repeat offenders.

“This was preventable. And I’m not going to save just one more life. I’m going to save thousands,” Federico declared.

He compared domestic criminal justice failures to immigration enforcement gaps. He emphasized the need for Logan’s Law, which has been introduced by U.S. Rep. Russell Fry and, prior to his death, Sen. Lindsey Graham.

U.S. Rep. Russell Fry stated: Common sense works. Common sense is easy. We have a sexual abuse registry that is publicly searchable. This is for violent crimes – it’s the same concept.

Attorney General Blanche urged lawmakers to act quickly, expressing his hope for bipartisan support. He remarked: It took a tragedy to push it to the forefront. But that’s okay. I think the worst thing we could do is not act.

The details of the crime are chilling. Logan Federico was staying with friends at a South Carolina home on May 3, 2025, when Dickey allegedly broke in. Dickey’s actions included driving a stolen vehicle into the neighborhood, stealing vehicle keys and a firearm from one home, and forcing entry into the house where Federico was present.

Inside, Dickey stole credit cards and fatally shot Federico, who was awake during the intrusion. Her father stated: He didn’t kill our daughter for a debit card. She was the only one awake who could identify him. He killed a witness.

Dickey’s extensive criminal history dates back to 2013, with convictions for various crimes. Critics and authorities argue that he slipped through the cracks of a lenient justice system.

Stephen Federico criticized current policies, saying: What we do as a society right now is make the criminal more important than the innocent. We have turned the page. We are the underdogs.

Logan Federico, a 22-year-old aspiring nurse, was tragically shot during the home break-in, highlighting the urgent need for legislative changes.
