Joey Francis, not typically known for gymnastics, showcased his tumbling skills Monday night for Lemont. Scoring twice, he celebrated with a back flip. His first playoff goal of the game sparked his excitement. “The adrenaline was racing,” Francis remarked. “Getting a second goal was amazing. I just went with it,” he added.
Francis had ample reasons to celebrate. Coming off the bench, the senior midfielder significantly impacted Lemont’s 6-0 victory over Hinsdale South in the Class 2A Chicago U-High Sectional semifinal. Other contributors included Gabriel Zarycki, Max Plewa, John Robbins, and Andrew Guzy, helping Lemont improve to a 15-2-3 record. They will face the host Maroons, holding a 17-0-2 record, in the sectional final at 5 p.m. Friday.
Goalkeeper Benjamin Pokorny ensured a shutout with four saves. He received strong support from defenders Plewa, Matthew Koutoulogenis, Mateusz Maka, and Christian Merkouris. “Defensively, it was about maintaining composure,” Plewa stated. “They had shots, but most went over the net because we were locked in.” Emphasizing the stakes, he added, “A mistake could end our season.”
Sava Nikolic had two shots on goal for the fourth-seeded Hinsdale South, ending their season at 12-10-1.
Francis relished his increased playing time, noting, “I didn’t play much last year. This year, I have more opportunities. I aim to make a difference for Lemont and hopefully go all the way.” Coach Rafal Slomba values Francis’s energy off the bench, saying, “We rotate players in that position, and Joey was ready. He performed amazingly, giving exactly what we needed.”
In the first half, Francis initiated scoring in the 32nd minute. His shot from 15 yards put Lemont ahead 1-0. Reflecting on the moment, Francis said, “The ball bounced around. I took a touch, looked up, and realized my position. I tried to take advantage, using my off foot, and succeeded.” He believes this was a game-changer, lifting the team’s spirits.
Plewa echoed the sentiment, stating, “Joey’s goal motivated us to aim for more.” Lemont surged with five second-half goals. “Joey showed us the way,” Plewa noted. His actions inspired the team.
Francis has played soccer since age five, influenced by his father, Joe, a former coach, and his sister Gianna, a fellow Lemont player. “My dad got me into soccer,” Francis explained. “He coached me young, and it was fantastic. Soccer is a family affair.”
The family celebrated his performance, marking his second two-goal game this season. “I scored twice against Richards, but this felt bigger,” Francis said. “Scoring in this match was incredible.”
