Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville offered crucial advice to Democrats regarding the 2028 presidential nominee selection. Carville emphasized the importance of considering the preferences of Black southerners, noting they are not as socially liberal as some might assume.
On the recent “Politics War Room” podcast, political strategist Mark McKinnon discussed the Democratic primary starting in South Carolina with Carville. Carville stressed that southern Black voters should remain the focal point for choosing a Democratic nominee. He described this demographic as the most loyal within the party, highlighting the need for genuine actions over mere rhetoric.
“The key, single most important voting demographic in selecting a Democratic nominee is, was, and should continue to be southern Blacks,” Carville stated. “There’s no more loyal constituency in the party. And by the way, just so people understand this, they’re not that liberal.”
Carville advised candidates to emphasize actual achievements that benefit Black Americans rather than using empty slogans. He criticized certain party rhetoric, calling it ineffective and disconnected from genuine engagement.
He also warned against the influence of far-left intellectuals, suggesting they might misguide the party. Protecting the power of southern Blacks in the nomination process is a priority for Carville.
“But don’t ever take power of nomination away from southern Blacks. ‘Cause if you give it to overly educated people, overly educated people mess everything up.”
Democrat Dan Turrentine, co-host of “The Huddle,” agreed with Carville’s observations, noting that the average Black voter is pragmatic about solving current issues rather than focusing on radical changes. Turrentine mentioned that successful candidates might appeal to both liberal and pragmatic constituencies.
James Carville’s advice underscores the significance of focusing on genuine actions and maintaining the influence of Black southerners in the Democratic nomination process.
