Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville has responded to remarks from socialist candidate Oliver Larkin, who aims to unseat mainstream Democratic Congressman Jared Moskowitz in Florida’s primary elections. Larkin suggested that Carville should step aside for individuals with new ideas. This comment prompted Carville, early recognized for his role in Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential victory, to retaliate.
Carville called Larkin, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), a ‘motor mouth,’ saying he shares this trait with other DSA members. Carville, known for his stance against far-left candidates, made these remarks on Fox News Digital.
The strategist criticized far-left and socialist candidates’ victories over mainstream ones in recent primaries, describing these candidates as ‘silly people’ and a ‘pack of fools.’ These victories are seen by many analysts as part of an ideological battle for the party’s future.
Larkin, at 33, previously worked on Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 Democratic presidential campaign. He is the only DSA-endorsed candidate running for Congress in a competitive swing district. He challenges Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz in Florida’s 25th District. Moskowitz receives support from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) and indirectly from AIPAC, a pro-Israel group. Larkin’s campaign has backing from prominent far-left figures, including political commentator Hasan Piker.
Larkin expressed confidence in the potential of democratic socialism to succeed anywhere in the country, stating he is proud to advance the DSA’s cause. He criticized mainstream Democratic strategists like Carville for losing influence within the party and failing to recognize emerging leadership.
During an interview on ‘Fox News Sunday,’ Larkin warned against excluding progressive voices from the Democratic Party, suggesting that their support will be needed for future elections, specifically in 2028.
