Greenland Challenges U.S. Oil Exploration Plans

13 minutes ago 0

The government of Greenland has issued a strict notice to an American oil exploration company linked to figures associated with the Trump administration. These actions follow Trump’s previously voiced interest in acquiring Greenland for U.S. national security and resource benefits. A LinkedIn post by a partner of the Texas-based Greenland Energy reveals that the company began shipping drilling equipment to Greenland in July without obtaining necessary permissions. This prompted the Greenland government to issue a strong warning that mandates all future logistical activities to be pre-approved by the Mineral Resources Authority.

The firm, Greenland Energy, made this statement in an August 6 letter to shareholders, emphasizing ongoing engagement with Greenlandic authorities. With initial plans to drill two wells, the company has since opted to reduce this to one well, citing it as the most responsible option after high-level discussions with regulatory bodies.

Trump’s Connections to Greenland Energy

Greenland Energy associates with several individuals linked indirectly to the Trump administration. SEC filings show that hedge fund manager Kenneth Griffin, a Citadel CEO known for his past Trump support, holds a 9.3% interest in the company. Furthermore, Carol Craig, appointed to Greenland Energy’s board, leads a defense firm involved in Trump’s missile system project known as the “Golden Dome.” Additionally, the chairman, Larry Swets, had past ventures with Paolo Tiramani, who funded projects at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago venue.

TV personality Dr. Phil McGraw will host a documentary series on Greenland Energy’s Jameson Land Basin project, set for a 2026 campaign. Dr. Phil’s prior engagement on Trump’s Religious Liberty Commission aligns him with supportive activities for Trump’s policies.

Trump’s Previous Aspirations for Greenland

Trump expressed a desire to purchase Greenland during his first presidential term, maintaining that controlling this semi-autonomous territory is crucial for U.S. security and resources. In December 2024, he asserted that control of Greenland is an absolute necessity, and he had not ruled out using military force to acquire the island, raising concerns both domestically and among European allies. Although Trump threatened trade tariffs against uncooperative allies, negotiations led to a tentative future agreement.

Greenland and Denmark firmly reject U.S. ownership, yet efforts toward a compromise addressing Arctic security concerns continue. Trump’s public declarations and images continue to convey his view on Greenland’s strategic necessity.

Greenland’s Oil Exploration Prospects

Although Greenland lacks commercial oil production, significant untapped reserves are believed to exist. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates the region might contain around 31 billion barrels of technically recoverable resources. In May, Trump’s envoy to Greenland, Governor Jeff Landry, suggested that Greenland’s potential oil output could significantly alleviate international supply pressures.

Greenland Energy, established last year, commits to unlocking the region’s hydrocarbon potential focusing on the Jameson Land Basin. This is characterized as one of the last unexplored basins in the world. Despite Greenland’s 2021 ban on new oil exploration licenses, this project proceeds under a legacy license transferred to 80 Mile in 2024. 80 Mile remains the licensee, with Greenland Energy holding the majority stake through a $60 million investment.

Progress and Roadblocks Ahead

Greenland Energy communicated to shareholders that interactions with Greenlandic authorities remain positive, and they are encouraged by regulatory progress. Yet, Greenland’s Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources underlines that no extraction permits exist, and exploration remains ongoing. Critical steps, including studies and public consultations, are required before any drilling activities can start. Greenlandic authorities doubt the completion of necessary approvals by the end of 2026.
