5 days ago 0

James Burrows, an iconic figure in the entertainment industry, passed away at the age of 85. He was surrounded by his loving family, who remembered him as an influential director in television history. For over five decades, Burrows shaped comedy in television, bringing joy to viewers worldwide.

Influential Career

Burrows began his illustrious career in the 1970s by directing episodes of popular shows like The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Bob Newhart Show. His work at MTM, alongside James L. Brooks and Steven Bochco, set the stage for his future successes.

Famous for multi-camera sitcoms, Burrows co-created the beloved series Cheers. He directed 237 of its 275 episodes, emphasizing the importance of strong dialogue over visual gags, a principle he learned from his father, Abe Burrows. Abe, a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, instilled in James the value of words and humor.

Impactful Directing Style

Known for creating a collaborative environment, Burrows worked closely with actors and writers. He believed in building camaraderie, as seen when he organized activities for the cast of “Friends” and “Mike & Molly”. His laughter during filming became a sign for actors that a joke landed successfully.

Despite many achievements in shows like Friends and Will & Grace, Burrows experienced setbacks. Not all projects succeeded, and he felt some shows ended prematurely. Yet, his commitment to comedy and humor persisted.

Legacy and Recognition

Burrows’ legacy includes working on pilots of Frasier, 3rd Rock From the Sun, and other memorable television moments. Though he tried cinema once, he remained dedicated to television, preferring the energy of a live audience.

He received numerous awards, including 11 Emmys and several Directors Guild of America Awards. Celebrating his 1,000th episode, NBC honored him with a tribute, indicating his impact on television comedy.

James Burrows is survived by his second wife, Debbie Easton, four daughters, and seven grandchildren, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to influence the industry.
