Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed strong disapproval of those she labeled as “hooligans” who took advantage of protests in Milan to create turmoil. This statement came after confrontations arose in the city’s historic center.
Meloni emphasized the distinction between the right to demonstrate and the destructiveness of violence. “Demonstrating is a right. Setting our cities ablaze is not,” she wrote in a social media post, criticizing the assaults on police and the destruction in the city.
The situation escalated during a protest against wars and increasing living costs. On Saturday, masked individuals engaged in aggressive actions, throwing objects at police and igniting fires. The unrest largely took place around Piazza del Duomo, near Milan’s renowned Gothic cathedral, and the adjacent Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, famous for its luxury stores.
Milan’s center-left mayor, Giuseppe Sala, acknowledged that the protesters had legitimate grievances. However, he condemned the violence against law enforcement and the damage inflicted on the city as unacceptable.
