The focus on enhancing Americans’ health involves reducing healthcare expenses and encouraging prolonged activity and productivity, according to CMS Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz. In an interview at the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C., Oz discussed his key takeaways from his experience in the Trump administration.
“The most expensive issue in healthcare is providing poor quality care,” Oz explained. He emphasized the inefficiencies of paying unqualified individuals for substandard work and then incurring additional costs to rectify those errors and address the resulting complications.
Oz’s priorities at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services center on maintaining “quality, quality, quality.” This approach encompasses everything from disease prevention to promoting healthy habits at home, such as preparing nutritious meals.
“Another crucial aspect is ensuring that every interaction within the healthcare system is value-based,” Oz stated. He stressed the importance of paying healthcare providers for holistic care rather than isolated procedures.
Advancements in healthcare technology, including AI, offer ways to deliver high-quality care. Oz highlighted the benefits these innovations provide in adapting to patients’ needs and driving improvements in medication, screening, and health perspectives.
Despite the availability of free annual wellness exams for Medicare patients, fewer than half take advantage of them. Oz pointed out that those who skip the exams might overlook underlying health issues, leading to more expensive treatments later.
“People are deceiving themselves by assuming they are fine without these exams,” he noted, emphasizing that ignorance can lead to costly healthcare decisions.
Oz projected that enhancing the nation’s health would contribute significantly to wealth and vitality. Enabling one more year of work for each American could add an estimated $1 trillion in value to the GDP, impacting taxes, social programs, and national revenue positively.
He acknowledged that while older Americans often desire to remain in the workforce, they sometimes feel less capable. “Let’s prioritize health,” he urged. “By doing so, we will not only reduce expenses but also increase earnings.”
