Hyperscale Data Centers’ Economic Impact in Northwest Indiana

A recent study on data center economics highlights the significant economic impact of hyperscale data centers on local economies. The study, conducted by Justin Ross, a professor of public finance and economics at Indiana University, and Saurav Roychoudhury, a professor of finance and economics at Capital University, has provided valuable insights.

The study, funded by the Northwest Indiana Forum, is the first detailed analysis of hyperscale data center development in Northwest Indiana. It specifically examines the regional implications of the Microsoft data center in LaPorte and an Amazon data center in Hobart.

Economic Impact of Microsoft’s LaPorte Data Center

Ross shared that the 1 gigawatt Microsoft facility is projected to contribute $16.1 billion in regional economic output over 20 years. This includes creating 14,651 construction job-years, generating $1.08 billion in construction earnings. Once operational, the data center will support 2,090 jobs in the area, with annual worker earnings estimated at $176 million.

Larger Impact Predicted for Amazon in Hobart

The data center in Hobart is expected to have an even greater impact. It is estimated to have a 1.5 gigawatt output and generate $24.2 billion over its lifetime. The report outlines the creation of 21,979 construction job-years as part of this massive undertaking.

Ross emphasized the importance of this economic activity, noting that data centers generate substantial regional output and jobs, potentially boosting the local economy for the long term.

Regional Economic Challenges and Opinions

Northwest Indiana Forum President Heather Ennis noted the encouraging findings of the study while acknowledging the support of data center projects. Nonetheless, Michael Hicks, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at Ball State University, expressed skepticism about the long-term economic benefits, cautioning that the jobs promised might not fully materialize.

Although data centers generate construction jobs, Hicks mentioned concerns over their ability to create high-paying, long-term positions. He remarked that these facilities primarily leverage existing resources rather than build new economic frameworks.

Considerations and Future Projections

Data centers may not bring high population impacts, according to Hicks. They generally require fewer public services and infrastructure, such as schools and parks. However, if properly managed, data centers can benefit communities through local taxes and responsible consumption of resources.

Ross indicated the complexities of predicting the ongoing impact of data centers. Factors such as fluctuating energy needs and evolving technology offer both challenges and opportunities. For instance, energy considerations are significant with potential implications on local energy prices.

While the industry is rapidly evolving, there are uncertainties concerning manufacturing supply chains and energy production. Partnerships and innovations, like retrofitting existing turbines or exploring alternative energy sources, highlight ongoing efforts to adapt to these challenges.
