House of the Dragon Season 3 Preview

The much-anticipated Season 3 of House of the Dragon starts this Sunday. With a two-year gap since the end of Season 2, let’s revisit what we know so far. The series features characters with names like Aegon, Aemond, Rhaenys, Rhaenyra, Rhaena, Daemon, and Daeron, making it challenging to remember who’s who. They are divided into Team Green and Team Black, each vying for control over the Iron Throne.

The Iron Throne Conflict

The conflict arises from King Viserys’s promise to his daughter Rhaenyra (Team Black) that she would inherit the throne. However, on his deathbed, Rhaenyra’s friend Alicent (Team Green) mistakenly believed Viserys wanted her son Aegon to take the throne, triggering the civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Understanding Team Black

Headquartered on Dragonstone, Team Black includes the houses of Velaryon, Stark, Arryn, Tully, Beesbury, Frey, Blackwood, and others. They have seven dragons, including new riders like Addam and Hugh.

Queen Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy): Once poised to inherit the Seven Kingdoms, she now faces Aegon’s rule. Her son Luke was killed, and her uncle/husband Daemon previously challenged her authority. She recently considered an unexpected offer from Alicent. She rides Syrax.

Prince Daemon (Matt Smith): Known for his rebellious nature, he wandered through mystical visions last season but later aided Rhaenyra’s cause. He rides Caraxes.

Prince Jacaerys (Harry Collett): He secured support from the North and rides Vermax.

Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint): He leads Team Black’s fleet and enforces a blockade of King’s Landing.

Insight into Team Green

Based in King’s Landing, Team Green supports the Hightower, Lannister, Baratheon, and Triarchy houses. They claim fewer dragons but include formidable players like Vhagar, the largest dragon.

Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke): Once friends with Rhaenyra, she and her sons are now adversaries. Recently, Alicent tried to negotiate peace with Rhaenyra, leaving the gates of King’s Landing open to her.

King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney): His reign started amid battles, and his favored dragon Sunfyre is missing in action.

Aemond (Ewan Mitchell): Known for his eyepatch and ruthless demeanor, he inadvertently escalated the war and rides the formidable Vhagar.

New Characters and Battles

Season 3 introduces fresh faces, including Daeron, the younger sibling of Aegon and Aemond. Roderick Dustin and Ser Torrhen Manderly join Rhaenyra’s forces, while Ormund Hightower leads troops for Team Green.

A significant development is Team Black’s blockade of Blackwater Bay, setting the stage for a major maritime confrontation. This standoff is crucial as allies move to break the blockade—a battle poised to be the season’s pivotal scene.

Finally, the dynamic interplay between Alicent and Rhaenyra remains central, despite the war. Their evolving interactions will continue to shape the storyline.
