Ed Sheeran Addresses Gaza Controversy at Philadelphia Concert

Ed Sheeran opened his solo concert in Philadelphia with remarks about Gaza following a week of controversy surrounding his tour. His comments came after rapper Macklemore, initially the opening act, was dropped due to pro-Palestinian comments made onstage. Sheeran emphasized that his music and shows aim for unity and humanity, avoiding political arguments.

During his performance at Lincoln Financial Field, Sheeran expressed his horror over the attacks in Israel on October 7, 2023, and described the situation in Gaza as catastrophic and unjustifiable. He told the nearly full stadium that he has found himself in the midst of debates over freedom of speech and complex political issues.

The week began with Macklemore shouting “Free Palestine” during a performance in New Jersey on September 5. As a result, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, whose company owns one of Sheeran’s tour venues, urged Macklemore’s removal. Sheeran stated he had no part in the decision. After Sheeran’s statement on Tuesday, his supporting acts, including Danish band Lukas Graham and Irish singer Aaron Rowe, withdrew. Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother, was slated to join Sheeran on a South America tour before also dropping out.

Before the show, a group of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside. Concertgoer Hillary Steinberg opted for a ticket refund, choosing to join the demonstration. She expressed disappointment, believing that art and music are inherently political. In contrast, Diane Savitz, another attendee, felt a concert should focus on enjoyment, separate from politics.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators held signs during the protest outside the venue. Macklemore announced a $1 million donation for Palestinian relief efforts, urging Kraft to match. Kraft’s spokesperson confirmed donations of $2 million each from both Kraft and Sheeran, without specifying the recipients.

Sheeran’s Loop Tour is noteworthy as the highest-grossing worldwide, with average earnings exceeding $7 million per city. Since 2021, Sheeran was ranked the third top-earning concert act. He indicated the decision to remove Macklemore was the tour promoter’s responsibility and argued that fans visit his shows to escape political discussions.

Sheeran shared he had engaged extensively with venues, seeking compromise before Macklemore’s dismissal. He assured the audience he would not let down fans or those dependent on him, highlighting the influential control promoters and venues hold over concerts.

At the Philadelphia concert, Sheeran reassured fans of his inclusive message. He stated that his concerts welcome diverse viewpoints and focus on themes of love, hope, and unity. Sheeran also voiced concerns about venues preapproving performances, calling it contrary to the notion of freedom in the world.
