High School Baseball Standouts Shine in 4A State Semifinals

In the high school baseball Class 4A state semifinals, impressive performances emerged from Naperville Central, Naperville North, Benet, and Waubonsie Valley. Each school had standout players recognized for their exceptional contributions on the field.

Naperville Central Achievers:

  • Cooper Page, a senior shortstop, demonstrated his skill with a batting average of .314, pitching in with nine doubles, one home run, and 18 RBIs across 36 games. He earned all-conference honors.
  • Michael Page, a fellow senior and outfielder, made a strong impact with a .385 batting average, accumulating 14 doubles, four triples, and three home runs, alongside 28 runs and eight stolen bases. He committed to North Central College.
  • Grant Umbright, a senior pitcher and third baseman, boasted a 9-1 record, a 2.03 ERA, and 71 strikeouts in 48 1/3 innings. He also contributed offensively with a .324 batting average, tallying four home runs and four triples. He committed to John A. Logan.

Naperville North Standouts:

  • Lawton Close, a sophomore pitcher and third baseman, maintained a 3-2 record with one save and a 2.56 ERA, alongside 46 strikeouts in 46 innings. Offensively, he achieved a .309 batting average with 11 doubles, three home runs, and 22 RBIs.
  • Max Steele, a senior pitcher and outfielder, contributed with a 4-3 record, achieving 47 strikeouts in 37 2/3 innings. He batted .375, accumulating 12 doubles, two triples, and 25 RBIs. Steele is committed to Benedictine.

Benet School Talent:

  • Gio Calandriello, a senior pitcher, returned from Tommy John surgery to achieve a 5-2 record, a 2.71 ERA, and one save with 45 strikeouts across 41 1/3 innings. He committed to Loras College.
  • Quinn Rooney, a junior first baseman, showcased a .385 batting average with five doubles, five triples, and four home runs, alongside 31 RBIs and an impressive eight stolen bases. He is headed to Notre Dame.

Waubonsie Valley Key Players:

  • Scott Gillen, a junior second baseman, excelled with a .353 batting average, accumulating 11 doubles, 38 runs, and 22 stolen bases while securing all-conference honors.
  • Shane Torres, a junior catcher, demonstrated offensive prowess with a .471 batting average, hitting 11 doubles, two triples, two home runs, and amassing 35 RBIs and 29 walks. He committed to Oakland.

Metea Valley’s Exceptional Performer:

  • Tyler Gluting, a junior outfielder, impressed with a .432 batting average. His record included 14 doubles and eight home runs among other highlights. Gluting earned Class 4A all-state honors and committed to Oklahoma.

Honorable mentions included players such as Jonathan Giedraitis from Benet, Diego Gutierrez from Metea Valley, and various others who demonstrated notable skills within their teams.
