Hasan Piker Faces Criticism for Views on Hamas and Israel

During a CNN interview, Hasan Piker, a prominent far-left Twitch streamer and rising figure in the Democratic Party, addressed criticism over his controversial comments supporting Hamas. The comments were discussed in an episode of the documentary series ‘The Whole Story With Anderson Cooper.’

Piker responded to critiques highlighted in a bipartisan House resolution in April that condemned his statements perceived as supportive of the terrorist organization, Hamas. He clarified, ‘I wouldn’t say I express support for all of Hamas’s actions or anything.’ He noted that Palestinians have an internationally recognized right to resist, though he acknowledged that both Hamas and Palestinian groups sometimes engage in war crimes.

His stance drew further examination when he compared Hamas favorably to Israel, criticizing the latter as a ‘fascist settler colonial apartheid state.’ Despite affirming his position as a ‘harm-reduction voter,’ who views Hamas as a lesser evil compared to Israel, Piker clarified that his stance is not an endorsement of Hamas’s domestic policies, which include anti-women and anti-LGBTQ positions.

During the discussion, CNN reporter Donie O’Sullivan challenged Piker on the implications of supporting Hamas. O’Sullivan pointed out that voting for Hamas is tantamount to endorsing its limited rights for women and homophobia. Piker reiterated, ‘It’s not an endorsement of their domestic policies.’ He believes the Israeli occupation remains the predominant issue for Palestinians over internal disagreements with Hamas.

Piker’s remarks received condemnation from several organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and the American Jewish Committee (AJC). They criticized the silence from Democratic officials who continue to associate with him, suggesting it normalizes extremist rhetoric.

The ongoing controversy highlights a significant division within the Democratic Party, as some members voice concern over Piker’s influence. Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville recently stated he would leave the party if such viewpoints continued to gain acceptance.

Reports revealed Piker’s continued campaigning with democratic socialist candidates. He has faced backlash for past controversial statements, including a remark made in 2019 where he suggested ‘America deserved 9/11.’
