Gunfire Near White House Leads to Brief Lockdown

On Saturday evening, the White House experienced a brief lockdown due to nearby gunfire, which resulted in injuries to at least two individuals, as confirmed by four law enforcement officials. One person remains in grave condition. Officials are unsure whether both are suspects or if one is a bystander.

The U.S. Secret Service reportedly engaged a suspect, firing at them. Two senior officials have stated there were no reported injuries among Secret Service agents at this stage.

The Secret Service announced on X that they were aware of gunfire reports near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, actively working to verify details with personnel on-site.

An NBC News team at the White House reported hearing 20 to 30 gunshots at 6:04 p.m., prompting Secret Service agents to instruct reporters outside on the North Lawn to move into the press briefing room. Agents armed with drawn weapons stood guard outside as the lockdown was imposed.

The lockdown included the White House grounds and was lifted at 6:46 p.m.

FBI Director Kash Patel mentioned on X that the FBI is assisting the Secret Service on-site.

President Donald Trump remains in the White House. Vice President JD Vance was reportedly at the White House earlier, but it’s uncertain if he was present during the incident. The U.S. Capitol Police have yet to respond to inquiries on the event.
