Glen Powell Shuns Hollywood Politics

1 hour ago 0

Glen Powell, star of “Top Gun: Maverick,” has openly shared his aversion to engaging in Hollywood’s political debates. He believes the increasing divide in political conversations makes it hard to have healthy discussions.

“Over time, I realized that politics divide people,” Powell told Esquire. “People trying to prove their point—for me, it’s the worst version of a conversation. I genuinely do not like the discourse. It’s not as healthy as it once was.”

Powell’s stance on staying out of politics stems from his upbringing. Despite his mother’s involvement in the Reagan administration, political discussions were not common in his family.

He reiterated this sentiment in a past interview with The Guardian, stating, “I’m not a political person. I like things that bring people together.” Growing up, Powell learned to appreciate unity over division.

The actor sees entertainment, particularly action movies, as an escape from political divides and a way to unite audiences worldwide.

“There’s a universal language of action, which is also why those movies translate so well internationally,” Powell explained. “‘Running Man’ is about something universal—what you would be willing to do for the people you love, and how people can feel powerless in the face of a world that feels more unequal and unfair.”

Powell has established himself as one of Hollywood’s leading men through roles in “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Anyone But You,” and “Twisters.” His career began with humble beginnings, overcoming challenges in the casting process.

Powell’s breakthrough took years, once being told he would be lucky to “play a dead body” on TV.

“There was a point where I realized that acting is not a meritocracy,” Powell noted on “CBS Mornings.” “Just because you exist on a longer timeline doesn’t mean it’s going to work out. There are bigger forces at play.”

His determination led him to roles that leveraged his diverse skills, including developing and writing projects.

Powell’s career continued to flourish in 2026 with a role in the dark comedy thriller “How to Make a Killing” and voice work in “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.” He looks forward to starring in upcoming projects in 2027, including Judd Apatow’s “The Comeback King” and J.J. Abrams’ “The Great Beyond.”

In his personal life, Powell has embarked on a relationship with actress Michelle Randolph. They made their relationship public on Instagram in 2026.

Powell appreciates the supportive dynamic they share.

“Life is fast for both of us,” he told Esquire. “And we have the same values. She loves her family. I love my family. And we both care about work a lot. We both like to show up for our partners, and yet we also understand the balance of it all.”

He values having someone who encourages him professionally and personally.

“There’s something so lovely about someone rooting for you,” he said. “Someone who wants you to win in all the ways that are good for you as a human. Not just professionally but in all the ways that are good for your soul.”
