Caitlin Clark’s College GameDay Appearance Draws Record Viewership Amid Criticism

48 minutes ago 0

Caitlin Clark returned to Iowa to promote her Nike shoe and make game picks on ESPN’s “College GameDay.” The show drew its largest audience of the season, marking the biggest October audience in its 40-year history. Despite this success, Clark’s appearance sparked criticism from the podcast “The Sports Gossip Show,” hosted by Charlotte Wilder and Madeline Hill.

Wilder suggested that Clark needed to improve her public relations, questioning her decision to appear alongside Pat McAfee. McAfee had previously called Clark a “white b—,” but in context, he was defending her contributions to the WNBA. He argued that fans should recognize her talent rather than attribute her popularity to her race.

Wilder acknowledged McAfee’s apology, which Clark accepted, but still questioned Clark’s choice to appear on the same stage. The podcast hosts wanted Clark to repeatedly address issues of racism and threats, despite her having done so multiple times since September 2024.

Clark’s prior statements included clear condemnations of racism and hurtful behavior, addressing incidents as they occurred. Yet Wilder and Hill seemed dissatisfied with her continuous effort to combat negativity, urging further action.

Kelsey Mitchell’s comments regarding the increased scrutiny of the Fever were also discussed. Mitchell’s enhanced exposure and substantial salary growth in the WNBA can partly be tied to Clark’s impact on growing the league’s audience.

From a marketing perspective, Clark appears highly successful. Her endorsement deals with major brands align with her status as a popular athlete. Her new Nike shoe was nearly sold out shortly after release, showcasing her influence.

“College GameDay” averaged 2.9 million viewers during Clark’s appearance, outperforming expectations. In contrast, “The Sports Gossip Show” achieved modest YouTube viewership, indicating room for their own PR improvement.
