Gale Reed found herself surrounded by legends during a game on Wednesday night. Sitting in the same row as Bill Bradley, his daughter, Earl Monroe, and Monroe’s wife, she witnessed an epic playoff comeback. Her late husband, Willis Reed, had often spoken of the moment he famously limped through the Madison Square Garden tunnel to face Wilt Chamberlain in Game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals.
“I’ve never heard a roar like that before, like the building was just rumbling,”Willis, known as “The Captain” of the New York Knicks, had assured her.
On Thursday, Gale reflected, “Now I know that sound.” That familiar roar echoed as the Knicks clawed back against the San Antonio Spurs, erasing a 29-point deficit. The climax came when OG Anunoby made a critical shot in the final seconds, reminiscent of Reed’s heroics 56 years ago when he scored the initial baskets in a key finals game.
Gale attended Game 4 wearing a jersey signed by Willis. Earlier that day, a fan in a hotel elevator doubted its authenticity, so Gale shared her story. Remarkably, the same fan ended up sitting behind her at the Garden. She represented her husband, the two-time champ and Hall of Famer, who would not have been surprised by the Knicks’ resilience.
“Willis always said the playoffs were a totally different ballgame, a totally different beast.” Gale recalled him warning not to write off teams in the playoffs, despite the Knicks’ deep struggle against the Spurs.
The finals seemed destined to return to San Antonio tied at 2-2. However, the Knicks initiated a record-breaking rally, stirring excitement among Reed’s former teammates, including Monroe, Bradley, and Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Afterward, Gale lamented, “I just wish Willis was here to see it.” Many Knicks fans shared her sentiment.
Gale and Willis met in New York more than four decades ago. She was a nurse and a fan of college, not professional, basketball. At a nightclub near Shea Stadium owned by former Mets players Tommie Agee and Cleon Jones, they struck up a conversation which led to marriage in 1983.
Willis lived a life filled with travel due to his NBA and college coaching duties. Later, he served as a key executive with the New Jersey Nets and New Orleans Hornets, even after the Hornets moved to Oklahoma City following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Eventually, Willis retired and returned to a serene life near Bernice, Louisiana, where he grew up and attended Grambling State.
The Reeds often discussed basketball, with tales naturally turning to 1970’s Game 5 against the Los Angeles Lakers, where Willis suffered a severe injury yet helped forge victory for the Knicks. Willis famously received medical treatment before heroically returning for Game 7. His team warmly welcomed him, as did an ecstatic crowd.
If Willis didn’t come out, we knew we weren’t winning.said Frazier.
Reed made his first shot and added another, setting the stage for Frazier’s impressive performance with 36 points, 19 assists, and five steals. People often remember this night for Reed’s courage. Gale emphasizes how Willis embodied resilience, playing through pain without taking time off.
After 40 years of marriage, Gale lost Willis in 2023 due to heart complications. She cherishes their sweet bond, noting Willis’ humility. While many public figures sought attention, Willis preferred simplicity, driving an old Ford pickup even at the height of his success.
Despite working with other NBA teams, Willis remained loyal to New York, where he believed his Knicks might end the title drought back in 1994. Although they fell short, Gale stays optimistic for the current Knicks, who stand one win away from a long-awaited championship.
Gale plans to stay in New York for a potential Game 6. She admires the team led by Jalen Brunson, drawing parallels to her husband’s era. Should the Knicks capture the title, Gale hopes to capture a photo with players like Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns, mirroring her husband’s camaraderie with his teammates.
As she frequently does during games, Gale looked up to where Willis’ retired No. 19 hangs, reminding her of his absence at this juncture. Despite this, she relishes witnessing the resurgence of the Knicks, who have reignited dreams of championship glory akin to the days of The Captain himself.
