Ronald Acuna Jr. Faces New Injury Challenge Amid Braves’ Playoff Push

Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna Jr., known for his MVP achievements, suffered an injury during Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds. In the third inning, Acuna fouled a ball off his left leg, leading to immediate pain. He collapsed and crawled to the grass near the first base line. There, he consulted with the team’s trainer along with manager Walt Weiss for over a minute. Eventually, Acuna managed to walk off the field unaided.

Brewer Hicklen stepped in as Acuna’s replacement. The timing of Acuna’s injury is particularly unfortunate for the Braves. The team is currently vying for a first-round bye in the postseason. Should Acuna be sidelined for an extended period, they may have to compete in the Wild Card round without their seasoned MVP.

Acuna’s injury record is concerning for the Braves. This season, he has already dealt with two leg injuries, and in the previous year, missed playing time due to Achilles inflammation and a long-term knee injury. The Braves are hopeful that Acuna’s latest injury is minor since he remains a pivotal contributor, even during challenging seasons like 2026.

Acuna’s Performance This Year

Despite starting the year slowly, Acuna delivered commendable numbers with the season nearing its end. He achieved 20 home runs, drove in 55 runs, and maintained a .814 OPS across 104 games. This represents his highest game count since his extraordinary 40/70 season in 2023. While his OPS is not as high as last year’s .934, Acuna had a strong showing after a sluggish March and April. His OPS was .724 through April, and he then dealt with a hamstring strain in early May. Upon his return, Acuna showcased his prowess with a 1.056 OPS in May. However, he encountered challenges, batting below league average from June to August.

In September, Acuna regained his form, hitting seven home runs and driving in 19 runs, reflected in a 1.087 OPS. The Braves are relying heavily on Acuna for the upcoming postseason. As they gear up for a Wild Card series against stiff competition, the team hopes that Acuna’s injury amounts to no more than a minor setback.
