French Open: Arthur Gea Seeks Emergency Bathroom Break During Match

4 weeks ago 0

French tennis player Arthur Gea unexpectedly left the court during his first-round match at the French Open on Sunday. He urgently requested a bathroom break from the chair umpire. Gea, who entered the tournament on a wild-card, was facing Russian player Karen Khachanov and was trailing 4-2 in the first set when he appealed for an immediate restroom visit.

Gea told the umpire, “I need to go to the bathroom. I can’t move anymore,” expressing his dire need. Normally, players are permitted bathroom breaks only between sets. Tournament officials soon arrived on Court Suzanne-Lenglen and asked Gea the reason for the break request.

“Yeah, I’m sick,” Gea responded, explaining that he had “diarrhea.” A trainer later confirmed Gea was dealing with stomach issues.

Despite his explanation, the game continued. After the next point, Gea swiftly headed to the locker rooms. Post-match, Gea said the umpire allowed his absence due to “medical circumstances,” during which he received medication for his stomach pain.

Gea mentioned he felt fine the night before but began experiencing illness that morning. Ultimately, Gea exited the tournament with a loss to Khachanov in straight sets.
