The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C. now has fencing around it. Officials have introduced this measure to enhance security ahead of the July 4 holiday. This decision follows concerns after President Donald Trump pointed to vandalism as a cause of recent issues at the pool.
The pool, having undergone a recent $14-million refurbishment, faced problems including returning algae and peeling blue lining. Six arrests have been made in connection to incidents at the site, and 17 police reports have been filed, according to the administration.
The Department of the Interior has stated that the newly installed fencing is part of efforts to protect the landmark. This follows worries about its condition and upkeep. In a statement to The Hill, the department mentioned that vandalism concerns have led to the earlier installation of the fencing. The comment emphasized a rise in incidents involving what they described as ‘leftist activists.’
While specific incidents have not been disclosed, officials note an increase in security measures due to rising visitor numbers. Efforts to safeguard the landmark reflect concerns about its preservation.
