The Chicago White Sox clinched a narrow 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians, taking sole possession of first place in the American League Central standings. The game unfolded at Rate Field with 28,883 fans watching.
Randal Grichuk’s contribution came in the second inning with a double, followed by a score from Colson Montgomery’s single. Later, Miguel Vargas led off the sixth inning hitting his 17th home run, which clinched the final scoreline. These were the only hits in the game for the Sox, providing just enough for the victory.
Pitching played a crucial role. Sean Burke delivered an impressive performance, allowing only one run, six hits, with six strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Sean Newcomb relieved Burke, maintaining pressure with 2 2/3 hitless innings, striking out two and walking one.
“Burke put us in a good spot, covering a lot of quality innings,” manager Will Venable remarked. He highlighted the strategy of limiting walks against Cleveland’s strong offense.
Cleveland’s sole run was a home run by Kahlil Watson in the fifth inning. The Guardians’ starter Parker Messick was notable for 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, achieving ten strikeouts.
Vargas emphasized his approach, “Trying to compete, get on base, let the guys behind me do the job.” Venable appreciated the value of timely hitting from Montgomery and Vargas.
The victory marked the ninth consecutive home series win for the Sox. Starting the series one game behind, they now stand one game ahead of the Guardians.
“It means a lot,” Vargas said of the divisional lead, acknowledging the importance after a challenging road trip.
Despite their current standing, the focus remains on maintaining momentum throughout the long season, as Burke pointed out, “We know where we are at, what we are capable of, but still a long season.”
