During the 2025-26 NBA season, the Detroit Pistons made a remarkable turnaround. Once struggling, they rose to prominence, securing wins consistently. The team, just two years removed from challenging times, performed well in the playoffs. They triumphed over leading teams like the New York Knicks.
However, their playoff run ended with a Game 7 loss against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The defeat highlighted some playoff tensions that Detroit needs to address in the upcoming season.
Draft Moves and Selections
In the recent draft, the Pistons selected Ebuka Okorie from Stanford with their first pick. Sports analyst Cameron Salerno from CBS Sports assigned a B grade for this selection. Additionally, they received a B+ for picking center Ugonna Onyenso from Virginia.
According to Salerno, Detroit made a significant move by advancing several spots, leapfrogging over the Toronto Raptors at No. 19. This maneuver allowed them to secure one of the top point guards, adding depth next to Cade Cunningham. Okorie, known for his agility and scoring prowess, averaged 23.6 points per game in his freshman year at Stanford. He introduces a fresh dynamic alongside the Pistons’ star guard.
Salerno also noted the potential for Cunningham and Okorie to play cohesively. As for Onyenso, he brings elite shot-blocking skills, leading with a 17.4% block rate, which is valuable considering they traded Isaiah Stewart.
Analyzing the Pistons’ Draft Strategy
In my view, the Pistons’ draft strategy earns an A grade. Their primary need was to provide relief and support for Cade Cunningham. By selecting Okorie, they achieved this objective. The decision to move up and acquire him was bold but necessary, securing a top-tier point guard.
If Detroit had a player like Okorie in the previous playoff journey, their chances of advancing further would have increased significantly. Thus, addressing the need for a Cunningham complement was the right call. With this addition and a few more roster adjustments, the Pistons are positioned for a deeper run in the next season.
