Spain’s highest court has sentenced José Luis Ábalos, a former minister in Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, to 24 years in prison for bribery and corruption. Ábalos was once a prominent figure in the governing Socialist Party, controlling significant portions of the national budget.
Ábalos was found guilty of several charges, including criminal organization, bribery, embezzlement, and influence peddling. His former aide, Koldo García, was convicted of similar corruption charges and received a 19-year sentence. Both have pleaded not guilty, and their legal teams have yet to comment.
This verdict increases pressure on Prime Minister Sánchez, who faces multiple investigations involving close associates and family members. Sánchez, known for his liberal stance against President Trump and the far right, now confronts scandals at home.
In his earlier political career, Sánchez traveled Spain in his Peugeot, accompanied by Ábalos and García. This journey, once central to his rise, has now become a source of controversy. Other investigations have begun against:
- Begoña Gómez, Sánchez’s wife, ordered to surrender her passport and face trial for corruption and influence peddling.
- David Sánchez, the Prime Minister’s brother, who is on trial for allegedly receiving a patronage job.
- José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, a former prime minister, accused of accepting kickbacks for influencing a government bailout.
The police recently raided the Socialist Party headquarters, looking for evidence of attempts to discredit judges investigating Sánchez’s family. Sánchez claims that the cases against his wife and brother are politically motivated, a sentiment echoed by some judicial experts and political analysts. He stands by Zapatero, who asserts his innocence, yet he has tried to distance himself from Ábalos.
These developments mark a challenging period for Sánchez’s administration as accusations and trials continue to unfold.
