Folarin Balogun Faces One-Match Suspension After Controversial Red Card

The United States Men’s National Team secured a significant victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina, but now faces a challenge in their next match against Belgium. Star striker Folarin Balogun will miss the game due to a controversial red card he received in the second half of the previous match.

This red card results in a one-match suspension, confirmed by FIFA on Friday. The decision is positive for the U.S., as FIFA chose not to extend the suspension beyond one game.

“It’s important for me to say, first and foremost, it was totally unintentional,” Balogun stated. “The choice of the referee was his choice. I don’t think it was the correct choice. I think a yellow card would’ve been fair, due to it not being intentional.”

With Balogun leading the team with three goals in the tournament, his absence will be felt during Monday’s match against Belgium in Seattle. However, the team remains hopeful for a successful outcome, knowing he will return for the quarterfinals if they advance.

In the wake of the decision, former U.S. player Alexi Lalas criticized the referees, calling the card an “absolute joke.” The team must now adapt and prepare for the Belgium game without Balogun.
