Firefighters successfully halted the advance of a brush fire early Wednesday morning near the Department of Veterans Affairs’ West Los Angeles Campus in Brentwood. The blaze, which started around 2:50 a.m., consumed approximately 1.5 acres before being contained. Fortunately, no injuries occurred and no buildings were harmed. Authorities are investigating the fire’s origin.
Fire danger is notably elevated this week due to the season’s inaugural Santa Ana wind event, expected to intensify Thursday, affecting regions across Los Angeles County with increased fire hazard.
According to Ryan Kittell from the National Weather Service in Oxnard, Southern California will experience persistent winds of 20 to 40 mph, with gusts reaching 40 to 60 mph between Thursday afternoon and Friday afternoon. Mountain areas might experience gusts as high as 70 mph.
“In conditions that are both windy and dry, with regional humidity levels ranging from 5% to 15% and heat between 85 and 95 degrees, fire risk remains a prominent concern,” Kittell stated, noting that plant dryness amplifies the threat.
Officials in Malibu have cautioned that Southern California Edison might cut power in certain areas to prevent electrical lines from sparking fires.
