A tragic incident occurred in the Dominican Republic’s Bayahibe resort town, where a major fire led to the death of at least one Italian tourist and injuries to several others on Friday.
The victim, identified as 46-year-old Francesca Valentino, died at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel, according to the Dominican Republic’s Directorate of Out-of-Hospital Emergency Services (DAEH). In addition, at least nine other people sustained injuries, with three requiring treatment at external medical facilities, as stated by DAEH.
The Associated Press reported that authorities evacuated 1,690 tourists from the popular resort area. This information cites local authorities.
An aerial video captured the extent of the fire, showing smoke rising from several beachside structures, casting large gray shadows over the bright turquoise waters.
Officials revealed that the fire spread quickly because parts of the roof structures consisted of flammable palm materials, combined with prevailing wind conditions. This information was provided by Reuters.
Guests affected by the fire were relocated to other facilities, such as the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace. This nearby hotel, operated by the same company as the affected resort, remained unharmed, according to Reuters.
The Dominican Republic’s Emergency Operations Center (COE) assured that tourist activities in Bayahibe and the surrounding areas remain unaffected and continue safely.
Additional footage showed a drone spraying water on the smoldering ruins of the resort buildings.
Fox News Digital made contact with DAEH, COE, and Wyndham Hotels and Resorts for further comments.
