FBI and Atlanta Police Enhance Security for World Cup Semifinals

The FBI and Atlanta Police Department are preparing a major security operation for the upcoming World Cup semifinals at Atlanta Stadium. Intense measures are in place for the game between England and Argentina. The operations involve using drones to detect threats both on the ground and in the air.

The FBI has enforced the Federal Aviation Administration’s Temporary Flight Restrictions in the area surrounding the venue. According to the FBI Atlanta Field Office’s Special Agent in Charge, Marlo Graham, 86 of the 600 drones seized nationwide for violations have been intercepted in Atlanta.

The FBI uses a mechanism to detect unauthorized drones in restricted airspace. Once detected, they work on mitigating the threat these drones pose, Graham explained. We focus on ensuring no unauthorized drones interfere with the game, especially during crucial moments.

The Atlanta Police Department is working closely with the FBI. Their Drone Unit plays an essential role in tracking individuals suspected of illegal drone flying in restricted areas. Sgt. Kindu Franklin noted that most offenders are hobbyists who bought drones to capture footage of the games for social media purposes.

Although many hobbyists mean no harm, the police have to remain vigilant as there are potential risks if drones are weaponized. The department primarily uses drones for surveillance, identifying potential threats, traffic issues, and illegal drone activity. Sgt. James Cunningham highlighted their goal to provide insights ground staff cannot see.

Drones are launched remotely with controllers from handheld devices or docking stations at key locations. These stations, operational throughout the year, assist the department by providing aerial views of emergencies. Officers manage them using computers and PlayStation controllers, allowing efficient coordination with ground staff.

The department’s drone program has completed over 1,400 flights since June, logging over 550 flight hours. This level of activity provides extensive surveillance capabilities during the World Cup.

The FBI advises drone hobbyists to be aware of the Temporary Flight Restrictions in their vicinity. Restrictions within one mile of stadiums on non-game days and three miles on game days are in place to ensure the events are not disrupted.
