A town hall meeting in Dearborn, Michigan, intended as a routine event, became a focal point of controversy over Muslim culture’s influence in American civic life. Pastor Lorenzo Sewell of 180 Church claimed that Dearborn operates under Sharia law, sparking significant debate.
“America, we have lost this city. This is a city that is no longer up under American laws; we are up under Sharia law. We will not have it anymore,” Pastor Lorenzo Sewell declared.
This statement was part of ongoing anti-Islam protests in Dearborn, highlighting concerns that the Muslim community is trying to align the city with its religious views. Sewell believes these views conflict with broader American values.
Despite Sewell’s remarks, his references to Sharia law don’t correspond to legislative efforts but reflect his perception of favoritism toward Muslims under religious freedom guise.
A specific incident involving political activist Jake Lang intensified these tensions. Lang, known for opposing Muslim practices, was involved in a confrontation during Dearborn’s Arbaeen March, an annual religious event.
Lang often portrays himself as a defender of American culture. In one post, he suggested radical actions against perceived threats to the nation. During the Arbaeen March, he displayed a controversial sign, resulting in a violent encounter with Muslim counterprotesters.
A video of the incident shows Lang being attacked while holding a sign that read, “deport 100 million, save America.” Lang claimed he was targeted for preaching his faith. The event led to the arrest of one assailant, with police seeking to identify others involved.
Sewell and Lang argue that more action is needed and plan to continue their efforts to challenge Muslim influence and perceived Sharia law in the city.
Dearborn officials insist that the city’s portrayal as overtaken by Muslims is misleading. Mayor Abdullah Hammoud emphasized the city’s diversity and the contributions of various religious communities.
“When people portray Dearborn as some place that has been overtaken by Muslims, they aren’t simply attacking our Muslim and Arab communities. They’re also trying to erase our Christian brothers and sisters who have contributed immeasurably to the city and folks of other faiths,” Mayor Hammoud stated.
Dearborn stands as a notably diverse city, with a 2020 U.S. census reporting a 54.5% Arab population, making it the first American city with such demographics.
