At least one person died and six others were injured when gunfire erupted at a large gathering in rural California on Saturday night. The incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. in Morgan Hill, roughly 25 miles south of San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office.
The event was an unsanctioned party promoted on social media, attracting more than 300 people. Deputies initially responded to reports of intoxicated individuals on the road and someone throwing bottles at vehicles. Upon arrival, they found the party in disarray following the shooting.
Responding officers administered lifesaving measures until emergency personnel arrived, but one victim was declared dead at the scene. Several others with gunshot injuries were transported to nearby hospitals.
Preliminary reports suggest the use of a handgun, though no suspects have been officially identified. Homicide detectives regard the incident as isolated, noting that the investigation will be extensive and detailed.
“This tragic and senseless violence is entirely unacceptable,” said Santa Clara County Sheriff Robert Jonsen in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family, those recovering from their injuries, and everyone in our community impacted by this traumatic event.”
The sheriff confirmed an intensive effort would take place to identify and arrest those responsible. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Morgan Hill Police Department, Gilroy Police Department, California Highway Patrol, and San Jose Police Department, responded to assist at the scene.
