Three people lost their lives, and four were injured when their vehicle collided with an elephant in northwestern Uganda. This incident took place at Murchison Falls National Park, highlighting the growing tension between human activity and wildlife in the region.
The accident occurred on Sunday evening as a Toyota Hiace minibus was traveling from Arua city to Kampala. The vehicle struck an elephant crossing the road, leading to a loss of control. Police reported that three passengers died immediately, while four others, including the driver, were injured in the crash.
Traveling in the vehicle were seven officials from the Uganda Revenue Authority. The police emphasized the importance of cautious driving through national parks, especially during nighttime, and adherence to speed limits. They shared images of the wrecked vehicle on social media platform X.
The Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA) reiterated the need for motorists to remain alert in protected areas, where wildlife crossings are common. In 2024, UWA reported an average of three animals killed daily by speeding vehicles within Murchison Falls National Park.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Uganda. A similar tragic event occurred in December in India when a high-speed train killed seven elephants and injured a calf crossing the tracks.
