Experiencing Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest: A Memorable First Visit

Attending the ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ Fan Fest for the first time was a decision well-made. The event took place on July 25-26 in Berlin, gathering fans to celebrate Square Enix’s hugely popular MMO with 15 million registered players. Not only did it introduce several exciting additions slated for release soon, but it also offered opportunities for fans to participate in cosplay contests, snag limited edition merchandise, and enjoy some of the most electrifying end concerts imaginable.

Entering As a Newcomer

There was a slight hitch: I had never played ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ before. Surprisingly, this did not matter. The infectious enthusiasm of the 10,000 attendees was enough to convey the experience. ‘Final Fantasy XIV’ producer and director Naoki Yoshida began the Fan Festival 2026 with an extensive keynote presentation that lasted nearly three hours. He humorously promised a shorter presentation next time during a subsequent media-only press conference.

Nobody seemed to mind the length at the bustling hub27 in Messe Berlin. Yoshida, ever the entertainer at 53, donned a full set of fantasy armor and spoke effortlessly. The numerous teasers and trailers went somewhat over my head, but witnessing fans’ ecstatic reactions was a fascinating outsider experience.

The Show Floor

Having never attended a Fan Fest before, the show floor felt surreal. It featured tattoo parlors, dance zones, target practice, pachinko games, fairground fishing, and carnival knockdown games. Visually, it was a collision of various universes. A Wild West area stood next to a ’70s-inspired disco, overseen by a giant green rabbit wearing sunglasses. The juxtaposition of Greek columns with Japanese cherry blossoms caught my attention. For dedicated fans, stepping into the physical locations they had explored virtually must have been thrilling. Personally, I enjoyed the randomness of it.

Final Fantasy XIV Evercold

The trailer for ‘Final Fantasy XIV’s’ first expansion in three years was a major highlight. It features new realms, elemental challenges, and a massive piece of malevolent coal. The sixth expansion lets players explore a realm where grand airships navigate through encroaching ice. Players will undertake new quests, battle new threats, and earn powerful rewards. The expansion is planned for release in January 2027, giving me ample time to develop a new character.

The Piano Concert

The first musical performance at Fan Fest 2026 was simply beautiful. Keiko performed live symphonic pieces from the game. I found myself using Shazam to identify almost every piece. My favorite was ‘What Angel Wakes Me.’ Watching thousands of illuminated batons sway in unison was unforgettable. I immediately searched for the piece on Spotify afterwards. The event revealed how essential music is to the game. Each expansion introduces a fresh album’s worth of tracks. A panel featuring the game’s music artists and sound designers offered further insights.

Final Fantasy XIV New Jobs

‘Evercold’ introduces two new Jobs, which received enthusiastic applause. I initially did not understand the term ‘Job’ until someone explained it meant a character class. The expansion includes a ranged DPS and a formidable tank known for wielding twin shields. As Square Enix describes, these shape-shifting greatshields possess powerful ethereal artillery that end foes swiftly.

The Primals

Fan Fest 2026 concluded with a sensational performance by rock band The Primals, who played songs from the game. Seeing the keynote’s polite translator Koji Fox transform into the band’s dynamic frontman was a surprise. The set was unpredictable, resembling a mix between The Hives and Spinal Tap. There was a rap/rock track that felt like a final boss theme, a disco-inspired singalong, and a quirky stage invasion by satin shirt-wearing frog-masked performers, a nod to the game’s frog minion.

Discovering It’s All Free

The festival left a lasting impact. When my fear of missing out reached its peak, I checked the cost to join. To my delight, the base game and many hours of content are free to download. While subscriptions for later content and vanity items exist, having the opportunity to start without an upfront cost was enticing. I’ll see you in Eorzea.
