Eric Adams Faces Hostile Audience in Wisconsin Over AI Data Center Proposal

Former New York City Mayor Eric Adams encountered a hostile reception in Wisconsin while promoting a proposed AI data center. The audience frequently interrupted him with boos and insults, including accusations of belonging “in prison,” a reference to his past federal corruption case.

Adams, now working with real estate-related technology companies, attended the meeting on behalf of PNK Group. The company seeks to establish a 209-acre data center on a former paper mill site along the Wisconsin River. Adams told the audience, Whether we like it or not, folks, data centers are going to be here.

However, many residents opposed the proposal, expressing concerns over potential impacts on local resources like water and power. Adams faced shouts of, You’re here to steal our water! and Put it in your backyard!

Throughout his presentation, Adams attempted to open a dialogue and defend technology’s role in modern life. He shared a personal story about AI assisting his doctor in diagnosing his Type 2 diabetes, yet this resulted in more jeering from the crowd.

Despite one audience member defending him, Adams struggled to communicate over the commotion. In contrast, Adams’ chief communications officer, Todd Shapiro, argued that media reports failed to capture the full event. Shapiro noted that many attendees later approached Adams to express gratitude and ask questions.

Shapiro emphasized that Adams’ support for the data center aims to help communities recognize the economic benefits of AI and data centers. He maintained that Adams advocates for policies promoting responsible investment, job creation, and local economic growth.
