El Niño and Its Impact on California Weather

El Niño has made its presence felt in California, leading to expectations of a wet winter. Recent oceanic changes suggest a strong or very strong El Niño later this year, according to reports. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center stated there is a 97% chance of El Niño intensifying over a three-month period ending this December.

California’s history with El Niño reveals destructive winter seasons. A strong El Niño in winter 2023-24 brought above-average rainfall to Southern and slightly above-normal precipitation to Northern California. Historical data shows that during three of four very strong El Niños, Los Angeles experienced significantly more rain than usual, including the years 1982-83 and 1997-98 when rainfall doubled.

Understanding El Niño

El Niño emerges every two to seven years and typically lasts nine to 12 months. It’s a formidable climate pattern characterized by warmer water in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It can alter global weather patterns, impacting rainfall and drought.

Potential Impacts

El Niño affects weather differently based on location and season. In winter, it usually leads to increased storms across the southern United States, including Southern California. This can result in above-average rainfall, increasing the risk of landslides and flooding. A very strong El Niño also brings coastal erosion, evident in the 2015-16 event.

The phenomenon may prolong marine heat waves, affecting ocean life around Southern California. Warmer waters attract tropical species, potentially increasing shark sightings, as noted by experts. Marine animals like sea lions may experience reduced productivity and smaller pups.

Scientific observations show a decline in plankton and harmful algal blooms during strong El Niños. This can lead to a northward shift of species like market squid.
