DOJ Investigates DEI Practices at Arizona State University

3 weeks ago 0

The U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division has launched an investigation into the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at Arizona State University (ASU). This follows viral videos suggesting the university failed to provide equal treatment to students of different races, colors, or national origins.

In a statement, the DOJ accused ASU of trying to conceal its practices to avoid federal oversight, prompting the investigation. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon emphasized the importance of equal access to opportunities and resources for all students. She stated that the United States is committed to eliminating unlawful discrimination in universities, especially when attempts to evade oversight occur.

Arizona State University, a significant recipient of federal funding, faces scrutiny as federal law demands equal access to public education regardless of race, color, or national origin. ASU’s response to the investigation was that it adheres to federal laws and does not discriminate in admissions. The university also highlighted a state constitutional provision since 2010, prohibiting preferential treatment or discrimination based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin.

The DOJ’s investigation will explore possible illegal discrimination within ASU’s DEI policies related to admissions, recruitment, scholarships, and educational support. Despite these allegations, ASU’s spokesperson stated that the university complies fully with federal law and mentioned that commenting on unauthorized and secret video recordings of its employees is not permitted.

While the DOJ has not reached any conclusions regarding the investigation, it underscores its commitment to holding institutions accountable for discrimination practices.
