In Bar Harbor, Maine, Rep. Ro Khanna from California addressed the recent controversies surrounding Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner. Khanna participated in a campaign rally to support Platner and other Democratic candidates ahead of the upcoming primary. During a brief interview with NBC News, Khanna rejected the alleged behavior of Platner as described by three women who shared their experiences with The New York Times.
Khanna expressed his belief that Platner should apologize to the women involved. He stated, “I think he should apologize. I believe what he did was wrong, was misogynistic, was toxic or volatile.” Khanna emphasized the importance of acknowledging and opposing misogynistic behavior.
The allegations involved three former girlfriends, with one woman, Lyndsey Fifield, describing incidents of “toxic” and “unsettling” behavior. Fifield specifically alleged that Platner twisted her arm, forcibly moved her into a bedroom, and held the door shut. She claimed this was done until she “was calm.” Platner, however, disputed certain aspects of these accusations, including any claims of physical abuse.
Platner addressed the allegations in an interview with MS NOW, suggesting political motives influenced the statements made against him. Fifield, who has connections to conservative groups and Republican campaigns, was among those making the allegations.
Khanna’s public support for Platner came in the wake of these serious allegations. Speaking to a gathered audience, Khanna highlighted Platner’s journey toward self-improvement. He acknowledged the challenging past but commended Platner’s accountability and efforts to grow personally and professionally.
