Discussion on Xenophobia in Michigan Senate Race

1 hour ago 0

Peter Alexander, the MS NOW anchor, questioned Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer about potential xenophobia in the Republican strategies ahead of the midterm elections. The focus was on the Michigan U.S. Senate race between Democrat Abdul El-Sayed and Republican Mike Rogers.

Alexander’s show, “State of Play,” highlighted the prominence of this race, with appearances from both Barack Obama and Donald Trump supporting their party candidates. A clip aired where Alexander asked Whitmer about recent rhetoric against El-Sayed by Rogers and Trump, hinting that xenophobia might be a factor.

“Do you worry that there is some hidden xenophobia in Michigan right now that Donald Trump and Mike Rogers are trying to tap into?”

Whitmer responded, indicating that she believed Rogers and Trump might be trying to foster such sentiments. The conversation also touched on whether Trump’s language was dangerous. Whitmer agreed, noting that Republicans were diverting attention from pressing economic issues.

She emphasized the economic struggles, questioning if Americans were better off than they were two years ago, suggesting that many would disagree.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Whitmer’s office and both campaigns but received no immediate replies. White House Assistant Press Secretary Olivia Wales commented, stating Trump is challenging radical extremists causing division and turmoil and will continue advocating for American values.

The controversy involving El-Sayed deals with alleged Muslim Brotherhood ties, previously denied. Trump and Rogers have criticized El-Sayed for this connection.
