Last season, the NFC North was a strong division in the NFL. All teams managed nine wins each, but the Vikings and the Lions did not make it to the playoffs. The key question this year is whether the Lions can return to postseason play or face another challenging year.
Detroit Lions in 2023
The Lions started last season on a promising note. Despite losing Ben Johnson to the Bears, they had a solid lineup with both offensive and defensive strengths. However, after a strong start, a decline set in after the bye week, resulting in a 4-6 record in the final ten games. Notably, only one of their last six losses was by more than one score, indicating potential for improvement this year.
Offseason Changes
The departure of Ben Johnson led to some challenges, but the addition of Drew Petzing is expected to enhance the offensive strategy. Changes in the offensive line were made to bolster performance. David Montgomery was traded to the Texans, with Isiah Pacheco brought in as a replacement. While not as powerful as Montgomery, Pacheco comes with aspirations of his own. Moreover, the team extended contracts with key players, aiming for consistency.
Team Roster
Reflecting on last year’s close games, the Lions seem confident about making minor tweaks for postseason success. Without Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs is expected to see more action. Amon-Ra St. Brown remains a top wide receiver, connecting regularly with quarterback Jared Goff. The offensive line promises strong performance, which could lead to a dynamic offense. Defensively, health will be crucial, with strength in spots like Aidan Hutchinson at defensive end and a solid lineup of linebackers. The secondary, however, raises some concerns.
Betting Considerations
The Lions have a projected win total of 10.5. With a favorable schedule, they could reach this goal. Betting on them to win the division is an appealing option at +170. The schedule seems less challenging compared to the Bears and Packers, implying that surpassing the Vikings could be key. Another interesting bet is securing three wins after five games, with favorable matches against the Saints, Jets, and Cardinals, especially at home. St. Brown’s receiving yard line is marked at over 1249.5 yards, a reasonable bet given his consistent performance over the past three seasons.
