The Department of Homeland Security has announced changes to its travel regulations for Iran’s national soccer team ahead of their upcoming World Cup group-stage match against Egypt in Seattle. A spokesperson for DHS has specified that ‘Team Melli’ will be permitted to cross from their base camp in Tijuana, Mexico, into the United States two days before the match scheduled for Friday, June 26. This adjustment allows the team an extra day of preparation compared to earlier matches.
Despite these changes, the team is required to leave the U.S. immediately after the match concludes. The DHS highlighted that this modification is focused on ensuring safety on the pitch amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions and visa refusals affecting crucial team personnel.
The Iranian team has been dealing with numerous logistical issues since their arrival at their training camp in Mexico. These challenges have included multiple visa denials, strict border curfews, and unexpected security alterations, contributing to the overall complexity of their World Cup preparations.
