Democratic leaders from various regions of Virginia gathered on Monday for a rally in Henrico County. The main focus was the ongoing conflict in Iran and its implications for the upcoming elections. The war, which has disrupted oil markets, poses challenges for Republicans in the midterms.
Former Representative Elaine Luria addressed the crowd, highlighting the war’s more significant consequences beyond economic impacts. “This war is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s misleading about casualties,” she said. Luria is currently running against Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd District, a region with numerous Navy installations.
Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor, challenging Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, criticized her opponent’s stance on the war. Meanwhile, former representative Tom Perriello, contesting Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, aims to reclaim his lost seat, citing his opposition to the war as a driving force.
The rally also featured former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a military veteran and potential Democratic presidential candidate for 2028. He encouraged Democrats to aim for control of the House. “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” he told the audience of over 200 attendees.
The rally underscored the party’s focus on the conflict in Iran and urged action towards gaining a majority in the House.
