Democrats in Vermont are preparing for another attempt to unseat Republican Governor Phil Scott. Economist Amanda Janoo has emerged as their new nominee following a primary victory over Aly Richards, the former CEO of a child advocacy organization. Richards was supported by past Democratic governors Howard Dean and Madeleine Kunin.
Governor Scott, unopposed in his party, is seeking a sixth two-year term. Known as a moderate Republican, he has criticized President Donald Trump. Scott endorsed Nikki Haley during the 2024 Republican primaries and voted for Kamala Harris against Trump.
If Scott wins the upcoming general election, he might become Vermont’s longest-serving governor, surpassing Howard Dean. Vermont, like New Hampshire, elects governors every two years.
Scott’s popularity is evident, as he secured 73% of votes in the 2024 re-election, surpassing his 2022 result of 69%. Winning against him in November remains a substantial challenge for Democrats, despite their usual dominance in Vermont’s elections.
