In a notable political shift, Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) member Angie Nixon, a Florida state lawmaker, defeated the party establishment’s candidate, Alexander Vindman, in a state race. Nixon, who gained attention for her activism in the Florida Legislature, won by over 10 percentage points. Despite Vindman’s substantial campaign fund of $16.3 million, Nixon’s budget was roughly $1 million.
Angie Nixon attracted national attention in April when she protested with a bullhorn during the vote on a contentious redistricting bill in the Florida House. Dressed in a pink jumpsuit and wielding a pink megaphone, she charged down the aisle, disrupting proceedings. She declared the bill, supported by Governor Ron DeSantis, violated the Constitution and insisted, “What y’all are doing is illegal!” Her protest was recorded by fellow representatives and did not halt the vote, which passed 83-28.
In May, Nixon faced arrest after refusing to leave Governor DeSantis’ office while protesting the redistricting measure. She self-identifies as a member of the DSA, an affiliation highlighted by WUSF reports.
Nixon appeared in a worship service during her campaign at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Her primary battle was against retired Lt. Col. Alex Vindman. The winner is expected to challenge the incumbent Republican U.S. Senator Ashley Moody in the upcoming general election.
Moreover, Nixon has expressed strong views against honoring certain figures, including Charlie Kirk. She has criticized Kirk for making derogatory statements about Black people, labeling his actions as cloaked in scripture and asserting that support for him equates to support for white supremacy.
Nixon’s campaign platform includes a “working families guarantee.” Her policies advocate for Medicare for all, free childcare, a national rent freeze, an eviction moratorium, and a universal jobs program with wages adjusted for inflation. She argues these initiatives can be funded by taxing billionaires, emphasizing the need to prioritize everyday Americans over overseas military spending.
Regarding immigration, she supports abolishing ICE and starting anew with immigration enforcement. Nixon insists that “no person is illegal” and stresses compassion over punishment in immigration policies.
On policing, Nixon calls for demilitarization and investment in community-based public safety and crisis prevention. She has accused the U.S. of fueling conflict in Palestine, highlighting her international stance.
