Democratic Rep. Gonzalez Criticized for Campaign Spending Amid Rival’s Accusations

1 hour ago 0

Congressman Vicente Gonzalez of Texas, a Democratic representative, recently faced criticism over his campaign spending while accusing his Republican counterpart of similar actions. Gonzalez charged his opponent, Mayra Flores, of misusing donor money on trips to Disney World. However, Gonzalez’s own campaign expenditure records demonstrate lavish spending around the same time.

According to these records, nearly $20,000 was spent on both domestic and international travel with his wife. This included a visit to Disney World, staying at a luxury hotel in the United Arab Emirates, and dining at a Michelin-starred restaurant in Zurich.

In October 2025, Gonzalez publicly accused Flores of utilizing campaign funds for personal family trips. Photos shared on social media by Gonzalez showed Flores at Dallas Love Field Airport with family members and Disneyland merchandise. He claimed this was evidence of her enjoying ‘the good life’ on donor money.

“Living the good life on donor’s resources again,” Gonzalez commented on social media.

His allegations come despite his own records showing payments to Walt Disney Resorts totaling $1,122.76 for trips in March and May 2025, which aligned with Gonzalez’s social media posts from a Disney World family visit in April 2025.

In response, Gonzalez’s campaign manager stated all spending aligns with legal requirements and official duties, with public documentation supporting it. The manager emphasized that Gonzalez’s expenses were connected to his role as a federal officeholder and originated from obligatory duties or cultural exchanges.

Among these expenses was a $13,000 trip to the UAE in 2024, which included airfare and luxury hotel costs. Gonzalez described this trip on social media as a beneficial “after campaign break” and shared photos from the journey, although it reportedly merged personal activities with campaign responsibilities.

The campaign’s FEC filings showed various travel expenses labeled as “officially connected,” such as a $359.27 stay at Emirates Towers and additional lodging expenses in Rome and Zurich during Gonzalez’s official duties.

Criticism also arose around his extensive expenditure at upscale restaurants and hotels in the U.S. and abroad. Reports indicate substantial spending at venues like The Capital Grille in Washington, D.C., Eddie V’s Prime Seafood in Houston, and luxury resorts in California and Pennsylvania.

Continued scrutiny of Gonzalez’s campaign spending may impact his highly contested run against Republican Eric Flores in the upcoming election, attracting national attention to the district.
