Jennifer Welch and Angie Sullivan, co-hosts of the podcast ‘I’ve Had It,’ criticized homeschooling during their show on Tuesday. They described it as ‘weird as f—‘ and labeled it the ‘worst’ idea. Welch and Sullivan responded to a caller who complained about individuals attempting to homeschool their children, despite doubts about their qualifications as parents.
Podcasters’ Critiques on Homeschooling
Sullivan expressed concerns about parents in Bible study homeschooling their kids. She stated, ‘I just think homeschooling is a bad idea, from soup to nuts. I don’t care if you’re a nuclear physicist. I think it’s just f—ing weird as f— that you want your kids around you all day, every day and all night.’ Sullivan argued that homeschooling affects children’s socialization, adding, ‘I don’t trust somebody that wants to be with their kids 24/7.’
Welch accused homeschooling parents of pushing a script on their children, questioning their critical thinking abilities. She indicated that homeschooling contributes to ‘trickle-down stupidity’ and associated it with certain political ideologies. Welch claimed homeschooling is part of the ‘crazy Christian’ phenomenon in the country and suggested it borders on child abuse.
Criticism and Defense from Education Experts
Corey DeAngelis, a senior fellow at the American Culture Project, countered the criticisms. He said sending children to government schools is the real ‘weird’ notion. DeAngelis said, ‘It’s not weird to love your children and want them around. It’s weird to outsource them to strangers employed by the government.’ He pointed out issues like abuse, bullying, and violence prevalent in government schools.
DeAngelis argued homeschooling is not a radical experiment, unlike government schooling. He referred to government schooling as a model stemming from historical militarism and social engineering. He said, ‘Parents teaching their own children at home is how human beings learned for thousands of years.’
DeAngelis highlighted the failure of the government school system to adequately address the needs of children, stating, ‘The podcast comments reveal more about the hosts’ contempt for family and parental authority than they do about homeschooling.’
