On Friday, a federal judge overturned President Trump’s alterations to museums, parks, and landmarks nationwide. U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley in Massachusetts issued a preliminary injunction, mandating a halt to further changes. Judge Kelley noted these efforts aim to alter U.S. history misleadingly.
Judge Kelley highlighted that, under a supposed effort to promote American dignity, the administration ordered the removal of exhibits not aligning with its narrative, affecting national parks. The administration’s March 2025 executive order aimed to remove content allegedly disparaging Americans. Judge Kelley countered that the order sought to exclude vital historical experiences.
The administration must provide weekly progress reports on the restoration of altered exhibits. This includes restoring interpretive materials removed or damaged since May 2025 in National Park Service-managed sites, with a deadline of 21 days. The ruling comes after a February lawsuit by conservation and historical groups against the removal of accurate historical exhibits, including those about slavery and climate change.
Notable changes were seen at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, where exhibits on enslaved individuals under George Washington were erased. Similar removals occurred at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument in Arizona and Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum enacted the order, removing perceived partisan content from federally managed sites. An inquiry for comment from the Interior Department was sent Saturday.
Alan Spears from the National Parks Conservation Association praised the ruling for safeguarding history and science in parks. Bill Wade, from the Association of National Park Rangers, emphasized its importance for park employees providing accurate information. National parks are seen as belonging to the American people and embody values resistant to censorship.
