Criticism of NYC Mayor Over Delivery Worker Tips

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is under fire for claiming credit for a $104 million increase in delivery worker tips. Critics argue that this boost results from legislation passed before his tenure.

Mamdani announced the increase at a press conference and on social media, highlighting changes in Uber Eats and DoorDash apps that make tipping more visible. He proclaimed, “We’ve put $104 million back in delivery workers’ pockets” and suggested that this was only the start.

These adjustments come from a city law approved by the New York City Council prior to Mamdani’s mayoral term. The legislation came into effect without action from former Mayor Eric Adams, taking place 30 days after approval. The Mamdani administration began implementing and enforcing these rules in January.

A law is only as good as its implementation.

Before these regulations, the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection reported that default tips below 10% and hidden tip buttons on Uber Eats and DoorDash led to a significant reduction in tips for delivery workers. The new law mandated clearer tipping options, resulting in an estimated $104 million in additional gratuities since its enactment.

Mamdani’s office dismisses claims that he is taking undue credit, emphasizing that though the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection advocated for changes before Mamdani’s term, the execution occurred under his leadership. “We have been intentional about enforcing the laws on the books so that we are putting money back into the pockets of working New Yorkers,” a spokesperson stated.

Conservative critics and political figures expressed disapproval on social media, accusing Mamdani of capitalizing on predecessors’ efforts. Actor Michael Rapaport criticized Mamdani, stating, “He had literally nothing to do with this. City Council passed the bill last August.” The bill became a law without the signature of the former mayor.

Additionally, some commentators have raised concerns about the economic impacts. They suggest that increased default tipping effectively raises delivery costs for consumers. “Socialism 101 — have others pay for things and make as if it’s your accomplishment,” conservative influencer Leftism commented.

National Review contributor Pradheep Shanker added criticism by questioning if Mamdani increased prices for citizens, while finance podcaster Joseph Carlson explained, “The customer is double-paying for delivery,” discussing added costs due to market manipulation.
