Colorado Governor Faces Party Backlash Over Clemency Decision

The Colorado State Democratic Party has expressed its frustration with Governor Jared Polis after his controversial decision to commute the prison sentence of Tina Peters, a prominent election denier. This decision has led to significant backlash within the party.

At a state party central committee meeting, 89.8 percent of members supported a resolution to censure Governor Polis. The resolution was prompted by over 700 Democrats who signed a petition condemning his actions. They argued that Ms. Peters, who had been serving a nine-year sentence for tampering with voting machines, should not be released.

Ms. Peters had become a prominent figure among election deniers due to her attempts to demonstrate alleged manipulation of voting machines during the 2020 election. Despite a public and private campaign by political leaders across Colorado, including some Republicans, urging Governor Polis to deny clemency, he stood firm in his decision.

Governor Polis maintained that Ms. Peters received an excessively severe sentence due to her association with election conspiracy theories. He believed the punishment was not commensurate with the crime committed. Eric Maruyama, the governor’s spokesperson, commented on the situation, stating that sometimes the correct course of action is not universally well-received.
