Tragic Falls on Sauk Mountain Claim Lives of Two Hikers

A tragic incident occurred last weekend when a man from Washington state fell between 800 to 1,000 feet to his death while hiking. The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office reported that 66-year-old Gary Idleburg fell from Sauk Mountain in the Northern Cascades, located northeast of Seattle. Witnesses observed the fall on a switchback trail, and despite emergency responders’ life-saving efforts, Idleburg was declared dead at the scene.

In a related event the day before, another hiker, identified as 78-year-old Peter Kalapaca, was found dead on the same mountain’s steep terrain. Kalapaca had been missing for a day when authorities located him. The Skagit County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences, stating, “While nothing can lessen the loss of a loved one, we are grateful for the extraordinary effort made by everyone involved, which allows some measure of closure for the family.” Both men were found in challenging terrain, as noted by the U.S. Forest Service.

Sauk Mountain, part of Washington’s Northern Cascades, poses certain risks to hikers due to its treacherous terrain. Idleburg’s location was identified by witnesses who guided rescuers to the site where he fell. Kalapaca’s search involved ground teams, air resources, air-scent K9 units, and mountain rescue personnel working late into the evening.

These incidents highlight the hazards associated with hiking in rugged mountainous regions. Hikers are encouraged to proceed with caution and ensure they are adequately prepared for the challenging conditions.
