China Launches Shenzhou-23 Manned Mission to Space Station

4 weeks ago 0

JIUQUAN, China — China launched the Shenzhou 23 spacecraft on Sunday night, marking a significant step in its space exploration efforts.

The manned mission took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, located in northwestern China, with three astronauts on board. This launch, carried out on May 24, 2026, is a pivotal moment as China prepares for its first crewed lunar landing, projected for 2030.

The astronauts participating in this mission are Zhu Yangzhu, acting as the commander, Zhang Zhiyuan, and Lai Ka-ying. Notably, Lai is the first astronaut hailing from Hong Kong to embark on a space journey. She holds a doctoral degree in computer forensics, and the Chinese authorities recognize her with the Mandarin transliteration of her name, Li Jiaying.

The crew is expected to undertake numerous scientific and applied projects during their mission. Furthermore, they will perform an in-orbit rotation with the Shenzhou 21 crew, who have been stationed at the Tiangong space station for over 200 days.

One of the astronauts will stay aboard the space station for a full year, aiming to examine human adaptability and performance limits in lengthy spaceflight scenarios.

This mission will contribute valuable insights into human endurance in space as China intensifies its space program initiatives. Chinese astronauts have been conducting missions to Tiangong for several years, following China’s exclusion from the International Space Station due to U.S. national security concerns.

The United States remains a key competitor in space exploration, with NASA planning a lunar landing for astronauts in 2028. China’s Tiangong, translating to “Heavenly Palace,” first accommodated astronauts in 2021. Meanwhile, the Shenzhou program, which means “Divine Vessel,” has been instrumental in supporting space exploration, including an emergency mission last year to rescue astronauts stranded due to spacecraft damage.
