A tragic incident unfolded at the Damen Green Line station in Chicago, where a transit worker was fatally stabbed in a daylight attack. Chevazz Campbell, 37, faces charges after allegedly killing Julian Mobley, a 41-year-old janitor for the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). Mobley, a husband and father, was attacked around 3 p.m. on Thursday, according to reports from FOX 32 Chicago.
The altercation began when Campbell bypassed payment at the station entrance. Following a dispute, Campbell allegedly sprayed Mobley twice with mace before stabbing him in the neck. This horrific act took place while Campbell was already under electronic monitoring due to previous legal issues, including at least four probation violations linked to curfew breaches.
Police reported that Campbell also robbed Mobley during the attack, with the arrest occurring hours later. The crime scene at Damen Green Line station was sealed with tape as investigations continued.
In a statement, the Amalgamated Transit Union mourned Mobley, describing him as a hero who died trying to protect a colleague amidst a fare dispute. The union expressed deep sorrow for the loss of their fellow member.
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to the tragedy, ensuring that his administration prioritizes safety for commuters and employees within the transit system. Campbell faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, armed robbery, and possessing a weapon as a felon. The CTA has been contacted for further comments on the incident.
