Tennessee’s athletic department showcased a savvy move by introducing a ‘Happy Hour’ promotion during the 2026 football season. As the Vols prepared to host the top-ranked Texas team, the announcement that President Donald Trump would attend the SEC showdown in Neyland Stadium added to the pre-game buzz.
Considering the anticipated increase in traffic and heightened security, the university decided to open its stadium gates an hour earlier than usual. This allowed fans to start entering at 9 a.m. ET, aiming to prevent delays caused by security lines seen at past presidential visits.
With a 12 p.m. ET kickoff, traffic and parking activity around the stadium began early. Many fans, recalling previous experiences in Miami and Tuscaloosa during similar events, arrived well ahead of time to avoid last-minute congestion.
The athletic department’s decision included slashing concessions and alcohol prices by 50% from 9-10 a.m. ET. This enticement successfully encouraged fans to arrive and settle in the stadium hours before the game started.
The strategy paid off, drawing what was described as the largest early crowd seen 120 minutes before kickoff. University spokespersons reported impressive alcohol sales, with 95,000 units sold, generating $1.3 million in revenue. The first purchase happened just after gates opened, at 9:02 a.m., illustrating the prompt response from fans thrilled by the offer.
This effort translated to approximately 13,571 alcoholic drinks sold each hour by the conclusion of the game at 4 p.m. ET. Encouraged by this success, Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White took to social media, acknowledging the overwhelming fan response. He announced the continuation of the promotion for the rest of the season.
White mentioned that ‘Happy Hour’ would remain in effect, with Neyland Stadium gates opening three hours early and concessions offered at half price during the first hour. This gesture aimed to thank dedicated Vol fans for their enthusiasm and support.
The upcoming Saturday game against Auburn at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN will see gates open early at Hoyland Stadium, continuing the tradition.
